(....) The concert's opening number, Knut Vaage's "Jug Band Rag", is a piece in which the composer has been inspired by black music from New Orleans in the 20s. The piece is entertaining - it is scraped on a washboard and blown on a flute - but above all you notice Vaage's playful handling of rhythms and tempo, and his distinctly "French" feeling for timbre and instrumentation.
